Thanks for the kind words!
Here's another thing I noticed...the earth there is SOLID. I'm not sure if it's like that all around the area, but 2 inches below the soil in our campsite was solid rock. I couldn't have staked my tent down without a jackhammer, and believe me, I tried! Camp Garland in general was unusually rocky. One of the mothers commented on this, too, and wondered out loud what kind of geological upset would have caused there to be as many rocks as there were. This led me to think that although it would probably be fairly easy to conceal things or people in the area simply because of the sheer amount of woods, if all of it is that rocky and/or solid, then anything hidden would have to be placed more or less out in the open. There may not have been any possibility of burying anything (or anyone) very deep.
I don't know how this applies to the crime scene, since whoever did it seemed to WANT the girls to be found quickly, but it could explain why there were so many items in the cave, instead of being better concealed. I've often thought that if I had something that big to hide, I would have taken more trouble to conceal my tracks and, therefore, my things, but maybe there was no way to.
I've been rereading the book, and it seems to me that GLH was not a very savvy criminal, to put it mildly. He allowed his license plate to be seen by one of the two pregnant women, leading to his identification and arrest. He was idiot enough to break into an armed policewoman's apartment, and then he actually STAYED in the apartment building to try other doors after leaving hers, instead of realizing that he had probably just gotten the police called on him - which he had - and getting the heck out of there as fast as he could to avoid them before they arrived. From what I've read of when he was questioned, he's an incredibly bad liar on top of all that. The murders were sloppily done, true, but I can't help but think that there was someone else involved who had a little more foresight than GLH. If it had been just him, I would almost expect him to have left a business card and a map to his whereabouts inside one of the sleeping bags.
On one hand, circumstantial evidence points to him being involved - too much, in my opinion, for him to have been framed. On the other hand, I can't believe he could have managed that kind of a crime and gotten away with it.
